Friend and supporter of the University of Colorado Denver’s “CU Succeed” program Rob Stewart passed away in Florida after going missing during a deep sea scuba dive on Tuesday, January 31, 2017. He was 37 years old.
Rob was a Toronto-born award-winning filmmaker, biologist, environmentalist, photographer and conservationist who was best known for his critically-acclaimed 2006 documentary, Sharkwater, which focused on, and led to, a worldwide ban on the practice of shark finning and its threat to the species and the long term effects of the practice on the ocean ecosystem. His 2013 follow-up documentary, Revolution, broadened his environmental focus by examining and widening his concern to other ecosystems that are under threat on the planet.
Rob Stewart was committed to educating the public, with an emphasis on young adults. He assisted the CU Succeed Environmental Politics course offering by providing advanced materials from his documentary film efforts and through his willingness to remote lecture with our students. His commitment to education and the environment inspired our students to move their education beyond the walls of the classroom and into the world outside to make a difference that serves to benefit their whole community.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends.
