This election season has been highly contentious and atypical, so it is unsurprising that its outcome shocked many. Yet, we now have a new president and the norms of democracy expect us to acknowledge this. These norms are not only essential for democracy but for the academy as well.
The election season has also been very negative, including the inexcusable use of hate speech. Thus, it is also unsurprising that many in the United States and in our campus community are worried, particularly because of post-election violence which we find unacceptable.
Guided by a steadfast commitment to honoring human dignity, our department’s mission has always been to foster an environment of inclusive and collaborative engagement with every member of our community of learning.
Of utmost importance in this mission is respect for diversity. Respecting different opinions and perspectives enriches us and enables us to better appreciate the complexity of our world. It makes us better citizens who can effectively work toward our shared progress. We are proud of this mission and proud that so many members of our community uphold it. Therefore, we will staunchly and uncompromisingly protect this mission for all our students and colleagues.
We also plan to create opportunities for meaningful dialogue regarding the election and the way forward in which all are welcome. It will benefit the common good to work together to heal the current divisions. We hope you will join us in this endeavor, and our broader educational aims, with a spirit of openness and respect.
